Workflow Action: Add Owner to Opportunity

Overview

The Add Owner to Opportunity action in Stack allows you to assign a specific user as the owner of an existing opportunity. This is particularly useful for ensuring that each opportunity is managed effectively through the sales pipeline. If your settings are configured to sync contact and opportunity owners, updating the opportunity owner will also update the contact owner automatically.

Action Name

Add Owner to Opportunity

Action Description

When triggered, this action assigns the user you select as the new owner of the opportunity. If your platform settings sync contact and opportunity owners, the contact’s ownership will also be updated. You can choose to apply this assignment only to opportunities that are currently unassigned, or you can override any existing owner.

Important: This action requires an opportunity to be in context. This can occur if the workflow is triggered by an opportunity or if a previous Find Opportunity step located one. Without an opportunity in context, the action will not execute.

Action Details

  • Action Name:
A unique label to identify this step in your workflow.
    Mandatory: Yes

  • User:
The user to be assigned as the opportunity’s owner. This is typically a dropdown listing your account’s users.
    Mandatory: Yes

  • Only Apply to Unassigned Opportunities:
A toggle that, when enabled, restricts the assignment to opportunities without an owner. If disabled, any existing owner will be overridden.
    Mandatory: No

  • Sync Settings:
If contact and opportunity owners are synced, changing the opportunity owner will also change the contact’s owner. If they are not synced, only the opportunity owner is updated.

Edge Cases

  • Multiple Opportunities:
If a Find Opportunity step identifies multiple matches, only one (either the earliest or latest, depending on your selection) will be updated.

  • No Opportunity in Context:
If no opportunity is found or triggered, the action is skipped.

Example

Scenario:
A workflow identifies high-value leads using a Find Opportunity action and assigns them to a specific user for priority follow-up.

  • Trigger:
A lead qualifies as high-value based on form submission data.

  • Action:
    Find Opportunity

    • Filters: Opportunity Value is greater than 5000
  • Action:
    Add Owner to Opportunity

    • Action Name: “Assign High-Value Lead to Senior Sales Rep”
    • User: “Senior Sales Rep”
    • Only Apply to Unassigned Opportunities: Disabled (to override any existing owner)

With this setup, all opportunities matching the "high-value" criteria found by the Find Opportunity step will be assigned to the "Senior Sales Rep," ensuring they receive prompt attention and follow-up. If syncing is enabled, the contact owner will also be updated accordingly.
