Sending Data to Google Analytics in a Workflow

When using Stack, you can easily integrate Google Analytics triggers within your workflows. This allows you to track more than just page views—capture specific events like form submissions, user opt-ins, or support calls.

Understanding GA4 and UA Properties

Finding Your Tracking ID in Google Analytics

For Universal Analytics (UA) Properties:

  1. Open Google Analytics.
  2. Click on the Admin tab.
  3. In the left-hand column, select Tracking Info.
  4. Click on Tracking Code.
    • Your tracking code will be displayed here, starting with "UA."

For Google Analytics 4 (GA4) Properties:

  1. Open Google Analytics.
  2. Click on the Admin tab.
  3. In the left-hand column, select Property Settings.
  4. Click on Property ID.
    • Your tracking code will be a number.

How It Works

When you choose to add data to Google Analytics through a trigger or action, you'll see the following fields:

  • Tracking ID/Property ID
  • Event Category
  • Event Action
  • Event Label
  • Event Value

For example, you might set the Event Category to "Form Submission," the Action to "Exit Form Opt-in," and the Label to "Black Friday Form Submission." These can be dynamically set using icon tags.

Traffic Categorization

Stack uses a set of rules to categorize traffic by source, checking the full page URL and referring domain. Here’s how we categorize:

AttributeRules
utm_medium
utm_source
Google OrganicReferring domain is the Google search engine.
Paid SearchIf the utm_source is google and the referring domain is google.com.
FacebookReferring domain is facebook.com.
Paid Social"utm_medium" contains "cpc" and utm_source is facebook.com.
Direct Traffic or BookmarkedNo referring domains or tracking URLs.
ReferralReferring domain is example.com.
Social MediaReferring domain is a social media site like Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, etc.
Display TrafficReferring domain is example.com with cmp, banner, or display parameters.

Note: If both utm_medium and utm_source are set, they will be used. If not, categorization follows the table above.

How can I verify if my GA4 setup is working?

Visit your GA4 property in Google Analytics. Navigate to Reporting > Acquisition Reports. If everything is set up correctly, your data should appear here. You can apply filters for source and medium to refine your view.
